ABOUT OUR PRACTICE
our ApproAch to Therapy
-
Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is a practical treatment that focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. This evidence-based form of therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for a wide range of problems.
When we filter experiences through a lens of negative thoughts, it affects how we feel and often leads to behavioral problems such as avoidance or withdrawal, which only serve to worsen how we feel. CBT helps you identify and respond to problematic thoughts that are triggered in certain situations, the core beliefs that underlie them (e.g., I’m unworthy; incapable, or unlovable), and the unhelpful behaviors that fuel them.
-
Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy commonly used to treat anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In ERP therapy, clients are exposed to their fears in a gradual and controlled manner, while also refraining from engaging in their usual compulsive or avoidant behaviors. This helps them learn to gradually tolerate the anxiety triggered by the feared situation without resorting to their automatic responses. This ultimately leads to a reduction of anxiety and an improved state of mind.
-
Mindfulness is an important tool in our work with clients. Clients learn the process of observing thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations with a stance of non-judgment. Through this non-judgmental, non-reactive stance clients can better develop understanding of how their mind operates and experience a greater sense of peace and control. Emotions can feel overwhelming at times, but when responded to mindfully, one can better step back from the intensity of these feelings, observe what is happening, and decrease the likelihood of getting caught up in out-of-control emotions and reactions. Mindfulness has been shown to be particularly helpful for problems like addiction, chronic pain, obsessive thinking, and anxiety.
-
Insight-oriented psychotherapy helps individuals understand how events in their past are negatively influencing their current thoughts, feelings, and unconscious behaviors. In this way, it helps to clarify the underlying sources of certain patterns or struggles. Typically, this exploratory type of therapy helps individuals connect certain dots in their lives, which can lead to an increase in self awareness and self acceptance.
